Blog Post - Week 1 "Coo Coo"

"Coo Coo" by Dink Roberts seems like it was formed for comedic relief in music while still adding a the typical words that would be expected in a love song. By far my favorite part of the song is understanding that he is still an entertainer and jokes with the men in the room with his last couple of lyrics. The contrast to the words of the rest of the song make it one of the most memorable songs I've experienced so far. One of the repeated parts I could not get enough of was the repeated trills of the banjo in between every verse which would create a level of anticipation for the following lyrics by the singer. "Coo Coo" just seemed like one of those songs that can't be helped but to feel the beat with something so classic as being played only via a banjo. Personally I did have issues with the slurring of his words at points. I found the whole experience very catchy but way too difficult to understand whats actually being said. Dink Roberts is certainly one of those entertainers who isn't focused on receiving praise from the general public. His music is certainly all about about having a good time despite what he sings about.

  1. I have never heard this song, but after reading your description on it, I want to go listen to it. The part that caught my attention was how you said it was comical but still a love song. I love when songs can be funny but feel like something or give off a different feeling. I have always been hesitant to listen to older songs (from the 40s-50s) due to the sound quality and not being able to understand what is being said. When I listen to music that has words, I want to be able to understand what the song is generally about.

  2. I really like your interpretation of this song! My initial reaction is just confusion; I also have such a hard time understanding the lyrics. This for sure isn't something that I would listen to on a regular basis. I do agree that his banjo work is pretty impressive though. He definitely has talent!
