Blog Post - Week 2 "I Got Rhythm"

"I Got Rhythm" is by far one of the catchiest songs that I've experienced in our course. Ethel Merman does a spectacular job at singing such a classic song. Her style of "Belting" along with the high tempo accompaniment creates a blend that I find hard to not remember.  By far the climatic ending with the intense crescendo provided for a satisfying experience and a desire to replay the song again and again. As far as how does the song fit historically, its an amazing contrast to the Great Depression that the song was caught in. Ira Gershwin was well aware of the time period and the mentality of the general population. The lyrics to this song are designed to uplift and really get the listener into a better mood. I get the emotions that are coming from the composer to help in the population to forget on the personal struggle thats coming from financial issues. Some of my favorite music is by far the kind that puts me in a better mood or helps me focus on whatever assignments I have. It's no surprise that "I Got Rhythm" became one of the hottest hits for the emotions it brings.

Blog Post - Week 1 "Coo Coo"

"Coo Coo" by Dink Roberts seems like it was formed for comedic relief in music while still adding a the typical words that would be expected in a love song. By far my favorite part of the song is understanding that he is still an entertainer and jokes with the men in the room with his last couple of lyrics. The contrast to the words of the rest of the song make it one of the most memorable songs I've experienced so far. One of the repeated parts I could not get enough of was the repeated trills of the banjo in between every verse which would create a level of anticipation for the following lyrics by the singer. "Coo Coo" just seemed like one of those songs that can't be helped but to feel the beat with something so classic as being played only via a banjo. Personally I did have issues with the slurring of his words at points. I found the whole experience very catchy but way too difficult to understand whats actually being said. Dink Roberts is certainly one of those entertainers who isn't focused on receiving praise from the general public. His music is certainly all about about having a good time despite what he sings about.
